The Miss Universe event in Australia has a proud and interesting history, with some of the highlights including:
1972
MISS UNIVERSE AUSTRALIA CROWNED MISS UNIVERSE 1972.
NEW YORK TIMES July 30, 1972, Sunday
Miss Australia, 20 year-old Kerry Wells of Perth, was named Miss Universe of 1972 tonight in the finals of the pageant at this Puerto Rican beach resort. It was the first time in the 21-year history of the beauty pageant that an Australian girl won the title.
1979
WORLD FINAL HELD IN PERTH, WA.
The Miss Universe 1979 world final was held at Perth Entertainment Centre, Perth, Australia on July 20, 1979 and watched by an audience of over two billion. 18-year-old Maritza Sayalero from Venezuela earned Venezuela’s first Miss Universe crown. 75 contestants competed.
2004
JENNIFER HAWKINS BECOMES MISS UNIVERSE.
New South Wales entrant Jennifer Hawkins became the first Australian since Kerry Wells to win the Miss Universe title. Described as the ”thunder from down under” she won the crown in Ecuador against 180 entrants and in front of a TV audience of over 3 billion.
2011
SCHERRI-LEE BIGGS BECOMES MISS UNIVERSE AUSTRALIA.
The first WA finalist to take the Australian title since 2005; Scherri-Lee will be competing on the International stage on September 12 2011. She follows after Jesinta Campbell who won Miss Congeniality and placed second runner up in 2010 and Rachael Finch who placed third runner up in 2009.
The Miss Universe WA pageant provides a platform for Australia’s most beautiful, talented, educated and confident young women to compete for the Miss Universe Australia Crown.
